Nursery's garden tidied, replanted and decorated with the children. |
In 2010 I found funding to manage the renovation, maintenance and development of The Bridge Community Centre garden and set up a gardening group there. The site was transformed on a very small budget and I learned ways of ensuring the garden and plants did not deteriorate when the centre was closed at the weekends and occasional holidays, which is also an issue with school gardens. There are simple methods to cope with the extremes of weather we often have; this year the drought and hose pipe ban will be causing problems for many.
I try to use found objects and recycled materials as much as possible always with concern for the environment. A self-watering pot can be made very easily from a milk carton and can be used year after year. If you have a garden space that needs development or maintenance or you are just looking for some new ideas I would love to help you out. Working in the natural environment has been proven to raise serotonin levels, reduce stress, help sleep problems, stabilise conditions caused by dementia, heal emotional trauma and increase well being. Children who take part in garden activities regularly have better behaviour, are calmer and have improved concentration. Those who struggle within a classroom environment or who do not excel academically gain confidence and discover strengths and skills.
